Why Get a Medical Marijuana Card?
Step Colorado was the first state to legalize recreational cannabis, making it possible for adults–including those without medical marijuana cards–to purchase products containing THC. Just because people over 21 can buy cannabis across the state, however, doesn’t mean there aren’t still benefits of obtaining a medical marijuana card. If you have an eligible health condition but you’re on the fence about applying for a card, here are some of the biggest reasons to do so:
- Medical cardholders tend to pay less for cannabis
- Medical cardholders can grow more plants than non-patients
- Medical cardholders can have more cannabis products in their possession
- Medical cardholders can obtain cannabis products with more potency
- Medical cardholders can shop at medical dispensaries
Are you convinced? Or at least wondering what the application process entails, so you can start shopping at a medical dispensary in Boulder? Here are the steps for becoming a cardholder in Colorado:
Step 1: Visit Your Health Care Provider in Colorado
If you’re a first-time applicant between the ages of 18 and 20, you will need two physician certifications from two providers at two different practices. Otherwise, you only need one certification from one provider, who can submit it electronically on your behalf. You then have six months to complete the rest of the steps.
Step 2. Enter Your Information Online
First-time applicants must create an account to complete the application. After registering, you’ll have to input your information, including your provider’s details and your cultivation options.
Step 3. Pay the Fee
The application fee is $29.50. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid every time you apply or renew your application. Cards must generally be renewed annually. The fee can be waived for both first-time applicants and renewal applicants if their household income is 185% of the Federal Poverty Level or less.
Step 4. Check Your Email
If your application was completed accurately and thoroughly and you’re eligible for a card, you should receive an email confirmation that you were approved within three days. Applications can take longer to process, however, if they’re incomplete or if they were submitted with expired documents.
Step 5. Print Your Card
If you applied online, you will not receive a card in the mail. As such, you’ll have to log in to your account and print it. You can then take it to a medical dispensary in Boulder and stock up on high-quality cannabis products.
